8 Jul 2009I’m going to be up front and honest in this blog post. I absolutely hate webmaster forums! Yes, hate is a strong word and shouldn’t be used but for this case I’m using it because I hate them with a passion.
Forums are so saturated and some are popular where people think they are awesome. They end up going on these crappy webmaster forums non stop when you could be working, writing an article or adding content to your blog.
Many may ask why I hate webmaster forums? Thankfully I have written out 7 factors to why I hate them so much with such a strong passion!
There is over 30 million webmaster forums on the internet. That is a lot!! Most of the time these forums are full of members who contribute daily spam… what a community. What I don’t get is “newbies” creating these forums and expecting them to take off and end up millionaires, if only!
I think there must be a million threads on most webmaster forums threads that say their site has lots of potential to become the best in its niche. Not only that, but most sites you buy within marketplaces are absolutely bullocks, its a joke!
If we are talking about some of the “big and popular” webmaster forums, they run at 3 mph. You click on a thread, then it takes about 10 minutes to finally load. Talk about a pain in the ass!
Why do some bloggers waste their time on them whilst they could be working on their own blogs. Giving information out to others whenever you could working on their projects or their job?
Do you like the idea of hanging around fakes and scams? Well the majority of people lie on forums. I make such and such a week… I will sell you this nice spammy book to you for $50 and you will learn how to make $5,000 a month! Some people actually believe this too?!
You end up getting yourself into a routine where you go to these forums non-stop then you get side-tracked from working on your own sites that will actually make you money. Getting addicted to webmaster forums is a pretty bad thing, don’t let it happen!
You ever notice not really any of the big names (bloggers etc) never appear much on webmaster forums, because they have better things to do than piss about on them.

I agree! I hate webmaster forums with a passion. They are always full of people who are just too lazy to google something, or learn how to debug.

@Mike
Its not even that, its the fact they could try and teach themselves… pick up a book and read something rather than asking on a forum something simple as “How to make my site better”.

Interesting that you list the fact that you’ve found yourself getting addicted in the past as a reason for why you hate them. There’s obviously something about a webmaster forum that you get benefit out of?
Btw you screencapped SitePoint in #6, but it didn’t make the list at the bottom (maybe got replaced by GeekValley, which is listed twice?)

While i have to agree there are a lot of downsides by being on a forum for hours on end, but at the same time i see benefit. Like it or not you and i met on a forum.
I guess you can use a forum to help you START, but you really shouldn’t use it all day. I mean i won’t like i am learning affiliate marketing now and DP is priceless at the moment.

There are two sides to the story. Many newbies don’t know where to get information and by spending a few hours in the forums they’re pointed in the right direction.
People spending hours on forums and not doing their work either lack discipline or they simply prefer “hanging out” with others. As for the spammers, you’ll get them in every medium. They’re like the flu virus, spreading around and never going away.
Point # 7 you state that most high profile bloggers don’t spend time in forums. While that is true now, most of them spent a fair share of their time in forums when they were first starting off. Just to name three, Jeremy Schoemaker, Aaron Wall and Rand Fishkin all spent tons of time on webmaster forums. It was their launching pads, and that is true for many people today.
Btw, #6 Total Web Talk was moved over to forum.massivelinks.com in early 2008 and is now Massive Links Forum.
